Commandant’s Message Spring 2012

It has been a relatively quiet winter for our Detachment. We presented an Eagle Scout award, moved back into the Reserve Center but not yet with our own room, and continued VAVS lunches at the VA Hospital with the VA paying for the food. Toys for Tots has come and gone again and we continue to take in new members. Thankfully, some are younger; they must be our future.

Now Spring is here and along with it comes our main fund raiser for the entire year, Blue Rocks baseball and our concession. It appears now that we will get 7% which is an improvement and certainly better than 5% which in turn is better than zero. We need to consider how best to spend some of what will not be going to the VA lunches. Perhaps a small scholarship, whatever we do requires details and ideas?

At April’s membership meeting we will hold Detachment elections, the slate for which has been sent out previously. The opening for Junior Vice has received an inquiry and an offer. To have the office filled by someone with out of town travel limitations and limited availability seems not to be much of a problem (to me). You all have the final vote. With email and cell phones, contact is just a button push away.

The incoming slate of officers will need everyone’s support in order to keep the Detachment functioning. Please support each of them as we move forward.

- Thank you to the outgoing officers for all they have done, most of them over the past three year period.

- Thank you to all the members who have contributed their time, money, work, gifts and whatever they were able to give. Each of us can add something, no matter how small, and the sum of those contributions is what makes for a successfully functioning organization.

- Thank you to all members for the support you have given to me and the outgoing slate over the last three years. No one individual can run all facets of any organization. It must absolutely be a team effort.

Best not to start with individual’s names lest, I forget someone. The members know who does the work and those that do it know who they are. Thank you so much for your time. And thank you to all the wives who allow us to do what we do.

Adapt, improvise and overcome.
